Meet Aanya Shahi

I am running for Ward 1 Councillor because I believe public service should be rooted in one simple principle: people deserve leadership that is present, prepared, and accountable.

My commitment to public service has been shaped by both experience and education. At the City of Brampton, I served as a Program Administration Officer in the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer, where I worked closely with municipal administration, policy, and matters connected to Council. That experience gave me a firsthand understanding of how local government works, how decisions move from policy to action, and how much those decisions matter in the everyday lives of residents.

At York University, I have pursued studies in Law & Society while earning academic honours throughout my studies. I am also a member of the Dean’s Circle of Scholars, a distinction recognizing some of York University’s highest-achieving students. My education has strengthened my understanding of law, government, public institutions, and the responsibilities that come with public decision-making.

My family are proud farmers, with two farms here in Ward 1, and we have called Caledon home for more than a decade. We take great pride in growing and producing wheatgrass juice and garlic, and that connection to the land has given me a personal appreciation for the farming families, rural character, and agricultural heritage that make Ward 1 so special.

Outside the classroom and City Hall, community involvement has always been important to me. I have volunteered with initiatives connected to different levels of government, taken on leadership roles through clubs and organizations, and spent years speaking with people of different ages, backgrounds, and experiences. Those conversations have taught me that good representation begins with listening.

I am also proud to be a young candidate. I bring energy, ambition, fresh perspective, and a long-term stake in the future of this community. Caledon is changing quickly, and the decisions made today will shape what this town becomes for decades.

My generation will inherit that future. I believe we should also help shape it.

I am running to bring experience, preparation, and a new generation of leadership to the Council table, while always remembering who that seat belongs to: the people of Ward 1.
